Delver Daly ((Teacher Phy Ed))

Daly Delver D. Daly, age 84, a longtime resident of Mpls, graduated from Edison High School and was inducted into the Edison High Hall of Fame in 1999. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a master's degree in education. In college, he earned three letters in gymnastics, the Big Ten ring championship in 1939 and the Big Ten all-around championship in 1940. He was co-captain of the University gymnastic team and won the NCAA ring championship in 1941. Del taught one year in Thief River Falls, MN before entering the United States Navy. He served as a Communications Officer aboard three different ships during World War II. After his release from active duty in 1945 he accepted a position teaching physical education in St. Louis Park, MN. He was recalled to active duty in August 1951 and assigned to Harbor Defense Unit at Norfolk, VA until his release in February 1954. He retired from the Navy in September 1979 with the rank of Lt. Commander, USNR with over 21 years of federal service. He returned to St. Louis Park Public Schools in 1954 where he taught for 37 years, retiring in 1983. He was active in the teacher union movement there and served a number of terms as president of the St. Louis Park Federation of Teachers. Del was an avid golfer. He was a member of Minnesota Valley Country Club since 1957 where he had holes-in- one in 1986 and again in 1999. He was a longtime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and C.O.R.E.S. Preceded in death by a brother, George; a sister, Lucille. Survived by his wife of 45 years, Joyce; daughter, DeeAnne; son, Dan; sisters, Gladys Guzy, Dorothy Stellick, Florence Stancuk; five grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial service Monday 11 AM at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 4100 Lyndale Ave S, Mpls. Reception to follow. Interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Bethlehem Lutheran Church Foundation, the Methodist Hospital Home Care and Hospice or donor's choice. GILL BROTHERS 612-861-6088
