Lyle F. Santelman

Santelman, Lyle F. age 93, of Eden Prairie, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 3, 2017. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Patricia (Kelly) Santelman; children, Jane Berge (Paul), Mary Santelman (George King), Kate Richtman (Bill), John Santelman (Melody), Lynn Santelman (Paul Navarre); 10 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Clara (Fredrickson) Santelman; and his sister, Donna (Santelman) Miller. Lyle was born Aug. 5, 1924 in Frontenac and was a graduate of Lincoln High School, Lake City and St. Olaf College. Caring for others was always a part of Lyle's life. At age 14 he cared for his mother and sister when his father became ill. He ran the farm at a time when cows were milked by hand, and as a boy, he plowed behind three draft horses. He was a U.S. Army Air Force Veteran and served in the occupation forces in Japan. Lyle valued education and the study and teaching of mathematics. From 1951 to 1986 he taught high school mathematics in New Richland, Zumbrota and St. Louis Park. He taught one of the first classes in computer programming at St. Louis Park. When his wife's young brothers, Tom and Dan, were orphaned as teenagers, he welcomed them into his home and raised them with his own 5 children. Lyle loved his family and was a devoted husband and father. He loved skiing, gardening, bridge, golf and travel. A Mass will be held at Noon on Saturday, Dec. 9 at the Church of St. Edward, 9401 Nesbitt Ave S., Bloomington: lunch following. Visitation one hour before the funeral at St. Edward's.
