Richard Wainio (Teacher)

Wainio, Richard L. age 85, passed away on March 19, 2014. Preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Enid, in August 2013. Survived by daughters Cheryl Iverson and Linda Wainio (Bruce Casselton); grand- children Ben Iverson (Stephanie), Joe Iverson, Sam Casselton (Anna) and Jane Martin (Trey); and great-grandson, Will Iverson. He attended Duluth Public Schools, UMD and the U of MN, earning advanced degrees in education. His career, dedicated to youth, began as a camp counselor and continued for decades as a teacher, swimming and diving coach, and administrator. In 1987 he retired as the principal of St. Louis Park High School. During his tenure as principal, the school was recognized as a National High School of Excellence, with an award presented in the White House Rose Garden. He was proud to have taught thousands of youngsters to swim. He was an avid reader and enjoyed writing, golf, gardening, solving crossword puzzles, attending his grandchildren's events, travel, watching local sports teams, volunteering and socializing with friends. He was an unfailingly positive and kind man. He was genuinely interested in people and encouraged and supported others. He led his family with his Christian faith. He will be deeply missed by his friends and beloved family. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Edina Community Lutheran Church or St. Louis Park Public Schools Foundation. Memorial Service 1:00 p.m., Sunday, March 30 followed by a reception at Edina Community Lutheran Church, 4113 West 54th St., Edina, MN.
