Paula Gurstel (Modell)

Paula Deane Modell

Modell, Paula Deane Daughter of the late Jules and Etta Gurstel of Minneapolis, MN, passed away from cancer on June 9, 2105, at her home in Watermill, NY at the age of 71 years. Married for 42 years to her loving husband Gerald, she leaves her cherished sister, Rhea Isaacs and brother Norman Gurstel (Jane) both of Minneapolis. Dedicated mother to son Eric (Natalie) and step sons Gregg and Steven. Adored grandmother to Eden, Hudson and Rebecca. After coming to NYC in the late 1960's, Paula worked in the fashion industry for the family dress manufacturing business (Paula Deane Originals). In the mid-1970s she co-founded a diet and behavioral modification company called Thin Forever. After a successful business career, she devoted her full time to her family. Upon son Eric's graduation from the University of Virginia McIntire School of Commerce, Paula and Gerald established the Modell Family Scholarship for Entrepreneurial studies. Paula is also a member of the lawn society at UVa. Both Paula and Gerald have had an active involvement at Columbia Medical Center and the New York Presbyterian Hospital. She is a member of the Executive Circle of the James Lennox Society. Paula's outgoing friendly personality has befriended many with her kindness and generosity. Her charitable and loving spirit has helped many continue as an ongoing legacy. Services on Friday, June 12, at 10 am at Temple Emanu-El, Fifth Avenue and 65th St. Contributions may be made in her memory to the James Lennox Society Executive Circle, New York Presbyterian Hospital, 654 West 170th St, NY, NY 10032, Attn: Tamiko Collier. The family will sit shiva at The Carlyle Hotel on Friday from 4-7 pm and Sunday from 3-9 pm.
