In Memory

Jon Storm

Jon Arvid Storm 1944 - 2012 Jon Arvid Storm, a resident at Heritage Green Assisted Living, died Monday, June 25 after a year-long battle against the onset of a brain tumor. Born on May 7 1944 in Lincoln, Nebraska, Jon was 68 years old. Jon is survived by his mother, Janette Storm, a daughter, Helen Kylene Privette (and husband Calvin) and a brother, Mark Storm (and wife Donna and son Josh). Jon was preceded in death by his father, Carl Storm, and a son, Derek. Moving from Lincoln, Nebraska to the suburbs of Minneapolis, Minnesota with his parents at the age of four, he graduated from ST. Louis Park High School in 1962 and was accepted and started college at his father's alma mater, Tufts University in Boston. His collegiate experience was truly a journey, as he attended in succession Tufts University, the University of Minnesota, Union College, Syracuse University, and finally Lynchburg College from which he received both his undergraduate (1974) and graduate (1975) degrees. College was interrupted by a brief tour of duty in the U. S. Navy during the Vietnam War. Jon finally entered the work force as a physical education teacher at Sandusky Middle School and was employed as the head varsity soccer coach of E. C. Glass High School for a brief time. Then followed a succession of jobs which included serving as an orderly at Lynchburg General Hospital, a store clerk at 7-11, the manager of the laundry at Lynchburg General, and several positions with Westminster-Canterbury Retirement Community from which he retired in 2005. His formative years in Minneapolis led to his lifetime love of ice hockey, and his experience of living with his parents and brother in Edinburgh, Scotland while he was in high school for one school year bred his love of soccer, a passion he carried into his involvement in the Lynchburg area as a high school soccer coach, referee, and commissioner. He was a member of both the Colonial Officials' Association and the Blue Ridge Soccer Officials' Association and also operated the score clocks at Heritage High School football and basketball contests for years. In addition to his immediate family, those left to cherish his memory are his many dear friends, especially Gail Giles, Stuart Porter, and Ronnie Alper and his comrades in the officials' organizations. Jon's family wishes to thank his trust officer, Claudia Zapp, the staff of Heritage Green, the legion of doctors and nurses from Lynchburg General and both the Oncology and Hematology branches of the Pearson Cancer Center, the dedicated members of Centra Hospice, and Kay Green for the loving support during his year-long battle. A visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 28, 2012 at Tharp Funeral Home and Crematory on Breezewood Drive in Lynchburg. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 29, 2012 in the chapel at Tharp Funeral Home and Crematory with Chaplain Wayne Lanham presiding. Interment will follow the service at Fort Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Centra Hospice, 3300 Rivermont Avenue, Lynchburg, VA 24503, Alan B. Pearson Cancer Center, 1920 Atherholt Road, Lynchburg, VA 24501 or a charity of your choice.
