I will always be grateful for 2 years in Mr. Vollmer's English class - 9th grade and then again in 11th grade. In 9th grade he inspired me to learn, excel and develop an interest in literature and grammar!  I loved it all. In 11th grade his continued inspiration energized me, helping me learn and gain a permanent interest and respect for literature - the written and spoken word. I loved seeing his beautiful paintings hung all around his classroom and found him to be a fascinating, if enigmatic man. Rest in peace Mr. Vollmer and thank you for all you gave to your students during our formative years.

Over all these years, I have thought now and then of Mr. Vollmer and of the amazing kinds of writing assignments he gave us - I wrote an epic poem on D-Day, of all things, and a short play set in Macchu Piccu... who but Vollmer would have thought to assign us writing that would stretch our skills and pique our imaginations.  Rest Well...

Mr. Vollmer was one of a handful of teachers who profoundly influenced my life and career.  We called him "Arion the grammarian".  You couldn't resist his enthusiasm and creativity, and his class and assignments were always fun.  He taught me to write well...correctly, creatively and efficiently.  I still have several of the essays I wrote for his class, one with an A+, which was an incredible compliment coming from him.   I read that he died in his 50's from a heart attack while shoveling snow at his home near Browndale Park.  Thanks again and rest in peace, Mr. Vollmer.

Mr. Vollmer taught english during my freshman year.  His enthusiasm for english and literature was genuine and contageous.  He clarified the parts of speech and grammar and made me learn them once and for all.  He had a "contract" system that also enticed me to read and write and actually enjoy it.  He was a strict, uncompromising disciplinarian - something that I needed then.  Soemtimes it takes  a while to appreciate some of our teachers, and in this case, he isn't here for us to tell him.

I had Mr. Vollmer for 9th grade as well, and few teachers have advanced me in a subject as profoundly as he did. What I remember most is how he made us diagram those sentences until the most convoluted structure actually made sense. Being able to write decently changed my life and opened many a door. (Although I am no longer sure what a gerund is -- and I should probably be diagramming some of these sentences!) He was among the teachers I tried to look up and thank in later years, but sadly he was long gone. Anyway, here's to you, Mr. Vollmer.
